Las pruebas del amor
Una princesa que solo tenía 17 años estaba locamente enamorada de un capitán de su guardia. Deseaba casarse con él, aún a costa de lo que pudiera perder.
Su padre, el Rey, que tenía fama de sabio no cesaba de decirle:
– No estás preparada para recorrer el camino del amor.
– El amor es renuncia y así como regala, crucifica.
– Todavía eres muy joven y a veces caprichosa.
– Si buscas en el amor solo la paz y el placer, no es este el momento de casarte.
La princesa respondía:
– Pero padre, ¡ seré tan feliz junto a él !
– No me separaré ni un solo instante de su lado.
– Compartiremos hasta el más profundo de nuestros sueños.
Entonces el rey reflexionó y se dijo:
– Las prohibiciones hacen crecer el deseo.
– Si le prohíbo que se encontrará con su amado, su deseo por él crecerá desesperado.
– Además los sabios dicen:
“Cuando el amor os llegue, seguidlo, aunque sus senderos son arduos y penosos”
De modo que al fin el Rey dijo a su hija:
– Hija mía, voy a someter a prueba tu amor por ese joven.
– Vas a ser encerrada con él cuarenta días y cuarenta noches.
– Si al final siguen queriéndose casar es que estás preparada y entonces tendrás mi consentimiento.
La princesa, loca de alegría, aceptó la prueba y le di las gracias a su padre.
Todo marchó perfectamente, pero tras la excitación y la euforia de los primeros días no tardó en presentarse la rutina y el aburrimiento. Lo que al principio era música celestial para la princesa se fue tornando ruido. Comenzó a vivir un ir y venir entre el dolor y el placer, la alegría y la tristeza. Así, antes de que pasaran dos semanas ya estaba deseando tener otro tipo de compañía, llegando a repudiar todo lo dijera o hiciese su amante. A las tres semanas estaba tan harta de aquel hombre que chillaba y aporreaba la puerta de su recinto. Cuando al fin pudo salir de allí, se echó en brazos de su padre agradecida de haberle librado de aquel a quién había llegado a aborrecer.
Al tiempo, cuando la princesa recobró la serenidad perdida, le dijo a su padre:
– Padre, háblame del matrimonio.
Y su padre, el rey, le dijo:
– Escucha lo que dicen los poetas de nuestro reino:
“Dejad que en vuestra unión crezcan los espacios.
Amaos el uno al otro, más no hagáis del amor una prisión.
Llenaos mutuamente las copas, pero no bebáis de la misma.
Compartid vuestro pan, más no comáis del mismo trozo.
Y permaneced juntos, más no demasiados juntos,
pues ni el roble ni el ciprés, crecen uno a la sombra del otro”
El amor es ciego
Cuenta la leyenda que una vez se reunieron en un lugar de la tierra todos los sentimientos y cualidades de los hombres. Cuando el Aburrimiento había bostezado por tercera vez, la Locura, como siempre tan loca, les propuso:
– ¿Jugamos al escondite?
La Intriga se levantó con los ojos fruncidos, y la Curiosidad sin poder contenerse preguntó:
– ¿Al escondite? ¿Y cómo es eso?
Es un juego – explicó la Locura – en el que yo me tapo la cara y comienzo a contar desde uno hasta un millón mientras ustedes se esconden y, cuando yo haya terminado de contar, el primero de ustedes que encuentre, ocupará mi lugar para continuar el juego.
La Alegría dio tantos saltos que terminó por convencer a la Duda, e incluso la Apatía a la que nunca le interesaba nada. Pero no todos quisieron participar. La Verdad prefirió no esconderse; ¿para qué? Si al final siempre le hallaban. La SOBERBIA opinó que era un juego muy tonto (en el fondo, lo que le molestaba era que la idea no había sido suya), y La Cobardía prefirió no arriesgarse.
– Uno, dos, tres…. Comenzó a contar la Locura.
La primera en esconderse fue la Pereza, que como siempre, se dejó caer tras la primera piedra del camino. La Fe subió al cielo y la Envidia se escondió tras la sombra de el Triunfo, que con su propio esfuerzo había logrado subir a la copa del árbol más alto.
La Generosidad, casi no alcanzaba a esconderse; cada sitio que hallaba le parecía maravilloso para alguno de sus amigos: ¿qué si un lago cristalino?¡Es ideal para la Belleza!; ¿Qué si la rendija de un árbol? ¿Perfecto para la Timidez; ¿qué si el vuelo de una mariposa? ¡ Lo mejor para la Voluptuosidad!; ¿qué si una ráfaga de viento? ¡ Magnífico para la Libertad! Así que terminó por ocultarse en un rayo de sol. El Egoísmo, en cambio, encontró un sitio muy bueno desde el principio, ventilado, cómodo… Eso sí, solo para él.
La Mentira se escondió en el fondo de los océanos ¡mentira, en realidad se escondió detrás del arco iris! y La Pasión y el Deseo en el centro de los volcanes, el Olvido …¡se me olvidó donde se escondió!… Pero no es lo importante.
Cuando la Locura contaba 999999, el Amor aún no había encontrado sitio para esconderse, pues todo se encontraba ocupado, hasta que divisó un rosal y, enternecido, decidió esconderse entre sus flores.
– ¡Un millón! – contó la Locura y comenzó a buscar.
La primera en aparecer fue la Pereza, solo a tres pasos de la piedra. Después escuchó a la Fe discutiendo con Dios en el cielo sobre zoología, y a la Pasión y al Deseo los sintió en el vibrar de los volcanes.
En un descuido encontró a la Envidia, y claro, pudo deducir donde estaba el Triunfo. Al Egoísmo no tuvo ni que buscarlo; él solo salió desesperado de su escondite que había resultado ser un nido de avispas.
De tanto caminar sintió sed y al acercarse al algo descubrió a la Belleza. Y con la Duda resultó más fácil todavía pues la encontró sentada sobre una cerca sin decidir aún en que lado esconderse.
Así fue encontrando a todos: el Talento entre la hierba fresca, la Angustia en una oscura cueva, la Mentira detrás del arco iris… (¡Mentira, ella estaba en el fondo del océano!), y hasta el Olvido, al que ya se le había olvidado que estaba jugando al escondite.
Pero solo el Amor no aparecía por ningún sitio.
La Locura buscó detrás de cada árbol, bajo cada arroyo del planeta, en la cima de las montañas y, cuando estaba a punto de darse por vencida, divisó un rosal y las rosas… Y tomó una horquilla y comenzó a mover las ramas, cuando de pronto un doloroso grito se escuchó. Las espinas habían herido en los ojos al Amor y la Locura no sabía que hacer para disculparse; lloró, rogó, pidió perdón, y hasta prometió ser su lazarillo.
Desde entonces, desde que por primera vez se jugó al escondite en la tierra,
El amor es ciego y la locura siempre, siempre le acompaña.
La princesa de fuego
Hubo una vez una princesa increíblemente rica, bella y sabia. Cansada de pretendientes falsos que se acercaban a ella para conseguir sus riquezas, hizo publicar que se casaría con quien le llevase el regalo más valioso, tierno y sincero a la vez. El palacio se llenó de flores y regalos de todos los tipos y colores, de cartas de amor incomparables y de poetas enamorados. Y entre todos aquellos regalos magníficos, descubrió una piedra; una simple y sucia piedra. Intrigada, hizo llamar a quien se la había regalado. A pesar de su curiosidad, mostró estar muy ofendida cuando apareció el joven, y este se explicó diciendo:
– Esa piedra representa lo más valioso que os puedo regalar, princesa: es mi corazón. Y también es sincera, porque aún no es vuestro y es duro como una piedra. Solo cuando se llene de amor se ablandará y será más tierno que ningún otro.
El joven se marchó tranquilamente, dejando a la princesa sorprendida y atrapada. Quedó tan enamorada que llevaba consigo la piedra a todas partes, y durante meses llenó al joven de regalos y atenciones, pero su corazón seguía siendo duro como la piedra en sus manos. Desanimada, terminó por arrojar la piedra al fuego; al momento vio cómo se deshacía la arena, y de aquella piedra tosca surgía una bella figura de oro. Entonces comprendió que ella misma tendría que ser como el fuego, y transformar cuanto tocaba separando lo inútil de lo importante.
Durante los meses siguientes, la princesa se propuso cambiar en el reino, y como con la piedra, dedicó su vida, su sabiduría y sus riquezas a separar lo inútil de lo importante. Acabó con el lujo, las joyas y los excesos, y las gentes del país tuvieron comida y libros. Cuantos trataban con la princesa salían encantados por su carácter y cercanía, y su sola presencia transmitía tal calor humano y pasión por cuanto hacía, que comenzaron a llamarla cariñosamente “La princesa de fuego”.
Y como con la piedra, su fuego deshizo la dura corteza del corazón del joven, que tal y como había prometido, resultó ser tan tierno y justo que hizo feliz a la princesa hasta el fin de sus días
