La única cosa que perdemos en esta transformación es nuestro cuerpo físico, pues ya no lo necesitamos. Es como si se acercase la primavera, guardamos nuestro abrigo de invierno, sabiendo que ya está demasiado usado y no nos lo pondremos de todas maneras. La muerte no es otra cosa. Ninguno de mis enfermos que haya vivido una experiencia del umbral de la muerte, ha tenido a continuación miedo a morir, y quisiera subrayarlo, ¡ni siquiera uno solo de ellos!”
La pérdida de un ser querido es la peor fractura interior que una persona puede sufrir.
Todos sabemos que la muerte es inevitable, que no solo llegará a nuestros seres amados, sino también a nosotros mismos. Sin embargo, tendemos a no pensar en ella y evitamos mirarla de frente. Pero el fatídico día llega, de manera inesperada o no, y nos golpea el alma rotundamente.
El duelo es el proceso psicológico de adaptación que sigue a la pérdida de un ser querido. Se trata de una reacción, principalmente emocional, en forma de sufrimiento y aflicción. Solo cuando se supera el dolor, se puede convivir con el recuerdo de la persona fallecida sin experimentar tristeza crónica.
En realidad, la muerte es un proceso y empezamos a morir en el instante en que nacemos. Morimos un poco cada día. El papa Pablo VI dijo: “Alguien debería decirnos, cuando empieza nuestra existencia, que ya estamos muriendo. Entonces sabríamos apreciar la vida en cada minuto de cada día”.
Nuestra mortalidad es un maestro de vida. Si no fingimos que no existe, nos enseñará tres lecciones que nos ayudarán a vivir plenamente. En mi familia se hablaba abiertamente de la muerte y el Día de Todos los Santos y el de los Difuntos, en los que los muertos son recordados y conmemorados, se encontraban entre las celebraciones más importantes del año. Fue así como, ya en mi infancia, aprendí la primera lección: la muerte, por indeseable que sea, es inevitable, así que ¿por qué pasarse la vida luchando contra ella?
– Primera lección: La muerte hay que aceptarla porque es inevitable.
Cuando algo cae completamente fuera de nuestro alcance, es imposible encontrar la felicidad hasta que aprendamos a aceptarlo como parte integral del curso normal de la vida.
– Segunda lección: la vida es ahora.
El inicio y el final de la vida son como las cubiertas de un libro. Lo que importa es la historia de las páginas -la vida- que hay en medio.
¿Cómo vivirías si supieras que hoy es tu último día? ¿Por qué tiene que ser el último momento para que elijas disfrutar del momento? Vive antes de morir.
– Tercera lección: en la vida estamos de paso.
La vida es un juego de suma cero: llegamos a ella sin nada y partimos sin nada. Para que esto sea matemáticamente correcto, todo lo que nos dan nos ha de ser arrebatado algún día.
Cuando llegue la hora dejaremos todo atrás: la riqueza material, las personas a las que amamos y todo lo que nos resulta tan querido. Lo que llamo “mío” lo disfruto y lo aprecio plenamente, pero no conservaré nada. ¿Por qué nos aferramos con tanta fuerza cuando tarde o temprano todos habremos desaparecido?
Aceptar la muerte nos ancla a la verdad y nos liberará. Puedes leer esto con tristeza o dejar que la verdad te libere.
Si pudiéramos conocer de antemano que estaremos bien después de la muerte, no nos importaría tanto morir. La muerte es difícil de aceptar si crees que ella te arrebata la vida.
Creo que hay vida después de la muerte. Creo que la vida no es el cuerpo sometido a las limitaciones del espacio-tiempo. Mi forma física descendió de las de mis padres, pero no mi vida. Mi vida ha existido siempre, fuera de los límites del espacio-tiempo. La muerte es el final de nuestra forma física, pero no es lo contrario de la vida.
El nacimiento y la muerte son los portales a través de los que llegamos y abandonamos esta forma física, pero la vida reside fuera de lo físico, donde no hay antes ni después. En realidad nunca morimos. En eso se basa la paz que he experimentado tras la desaparición de mis seres queridos. Confío en que nos volveremos a encontrar.
