Te darás cuenta cuando las canas se adueñen del color de tu pelo, cuando tu piel inspire más ternura que deseo, cuando no sepas decidirte sobre qué dolor quejarte y cuando tu habitación, parezca la nueva farmacia del barrio.
Sabrás que algo ha cambiado cuando quieras excitarte y no puedas, cuando duermas todas las horas nocturnas necesarias en horas de siesta y cuando la mayoría de las madrugadas suenes tú antes que el despertador.
Sabrás que algo en ti está cambiando cuando no comprendas de qué hablan los jóvenes “de hoy en día”, cuando expliques las memorias de tu vida y los demás sientan por esas palabras la misma fascinación y sorpresa que las que sienten con una película de ciencia ficción. Cuando, en lugar de cuidar de tus nietos, sean ellos los que te cuiden a ti.
Y, así, empezarán a amontonarse los días. Y, así, empezarás a dirigirte hacia una involución que volverá a limitarte las funciones para dejarte con las mismas que tenías cuando eras niño. Con la diferencia de que, antes, aún te quedaba una vida entera por vivir y, hoy, te queda una vida entera de recuerdos. Y eso, en el mejor de los casos, si es que los recuerdas.
Y es que vives para morir.
Vives para llevarte a la tumba lo mejor de la vida. Para aprovechar cada emoción que puedas sentir durante el camino. Y, sobre todo, vives para que aprendan de ti. Para que sepan cómo continuar sin tu presencia sólo con el hecho de recordarte. Vives para sentir melancolía al recordar un pasado que no pudo ser mejor. Para sufrir las pérdidas ajenas y cerciorarte, entonces, de que amaste.
Vives para disfrutar de cada oportunidad que te permita ser feliz. Para saltar, bailar, hacer el amor. Sí. Porque vives para hacer, mientras puedas hacerlo, todas aquellas cosas que después sólo podrás revivir en tus recuerdos. Y es que recordarás cada una de tus aventuras pasadas aun a riesgo de tener Alzheimer, ya que lo último que se pierde en esta enfermedad, es la memoria a largo plazo. Es decir, tus recuerdos más lejanos van a ser tu refugio aún a riesgo de padecer una demencia semejante.
Por lo tanto, vive tan apasionada la vida como puedas. Porque a pesar de que repitas las frases, de no recordar el nombre de tus nietos, de creer que tus hijos son tus padres, de haber olvidado cómo se sumaba, de pedir la merienda cinco minutos después de haberla comido, de no saber en qué mes estás, de creer estar en el año 1970, de no recordar el nombre de ciertas palabras… A pesar de todo esto –y de mucho más- mientras seas capaz de recordar cómo te llamas, aún serás capaz de recordar gran parte de la historia de tu vida.
Por eso, jovenzuelo, más te vale que, ahora mismo, estés construyendo un presente que valga la pena recordar.
Porque, en los recuerdos, es donde permanecerá tu identidad. Y es que, lo que hayas sido, te perseguirá hasta la última etapa de tu vida.
Tú decides qué tipo de recuerdos quieres tener mañana.
Y, amigo, todo depende de los momentos que construyas hoy.
