La nostalgia puede ser un estado de ánimo reparador aunque los expertos nos repiten incesantemente la necesidad de vivir el presente. Un espejo retrovisor al que mirar cuando el futuro es incierto, una película que nos recuerda todo lo conseguido. La nostalgia no siempre es objetiva, a veces es tramposa y nos devuelve recuerdos maquillados, pero es útil y abriga.
Así que estamos ante un sentimiento tramposo, porque no hay más paraísos que los que se inventa nuestra memoria. Al volver la vista atrás, se olvidan los motivos que llevaron a la ruptura con aquella pareja que tanto se echa de menos, no se recuerda que en la infancia no todo es jugar en el recreo y se omite que los buenos tiempos también tuvieron sus espinas. “La nostalgia se compone de brochazos muy simples que nos impiden ver el pasado con exactitud”
Esta especie de melancolía que impide vivir el presente y encarar el futuro es excesiva porque no nos gusta ni el hoy ni el mañana. “La nostalgia es muy atractiva porque el pasado tiene una pureza y una candidez que ni el presente ni el futuro poseen. El pasado no crea ansiedad. Y el presente y el futuro siempre crean ansiedad; esa es la razón de que aparezca la nostalgia”. Se siente mucha añoranza de un amor cuando en el presente se carece de él. Se siente mucha nostalgia de un pasado libre de preocupaciones cuando las actuales aprietan demasiado. El sentimiento nos asalta al rememorar los viajes de juventud cuando ahora la rutina no tiene compasión. La nostalgia excesiva casi siempre aparece cuando el presente es desagradable y el futuro es amenazante.
No es lo mismo dejarse llevar de vez en cuando por la nostalgia que vivir esclavizado por ella. “El problema es si te anclas en el pasado”. Nadie está libre de sentir nostalgia en alguna ocasión. Pero es muy diferente recordar con añoranza la juventud una tarde de domingo que ser infeliz en la vejez porque se recuerda la juventud como el paraíso que no volverá. Es muy diferente echar de menos el pasado de vez en cuando que vivir instalado en él.
La nostalgia es una felicidad triste. Se recuerda el gozo del pasado, pero duele saber que todas esas experiencias ya no pueden volver. Por eso es el dolor de la memoria. Lo perdido parece inolvidable, único e irrepetible. Se tiene nostalgia por algo que crees que te hizo feliz, que crees que te hacía estar completo, que parece perfecto.
La palabra nostalgia deriva del griego nostos (hogar) y algos (dolor). Fue creada a finales del siglo XVII por el médico suizo Johannes Hofer para describir el estado de ánimo de los soldados suizos que luchaban fuera de su país, que sentían una “tristeza originada por el deseo de volver a su casa”. Hay muchos motivos para la nostalgia: la que siente el emigrante por su tierra de origen; la que se anhela por una infancia que se recuerda maravillosa y libre de problemas; la del vigor y el optimismo de la juventud, cuando todo estaba por hacer; la nostalgia del primer novio o la primera novia, con quien se descubrió el amor y el sexo; la de una forma de vivir que ya no volverá; la nostalgia por los viejos amigos…
